SOA & CALIXTO : MAKING THE WORLD TURN
Ève Magot, 2021
This film is a gift.
Before and after, there are a few things. A context. Stories.
It is the result of long conversations and reflections we had with Calixto and Soa during the creative process for the play Dans le mille.
For me, this duet was the climax, the moment of pleasure, hips grinding against hips.
I fantasized about dancing this part.
Calixto and Soa helped me understand that this was not the main issue.
I sat down and watched them dance.
Today it’s your turn.
“If it’s just to be cute, pretty, sexy, I’m not interested.
We’re going to dance in front of a predominantly white audience in France.
With all the preconceptions they already have about us, our people, our bodies, our stories. With the fantasies and prism of racist colonial history.
A black Brazilian person and a black Martinican person.
Dancing with each other, for each other, for their own pleasure.
If we do this, it’s to celebrate ourselves.
It’s so rare.
To celebrate ourselves.”
